【Hong Kong Policy Act Report 2023】

【Hong Kong Policy Act Report 2023】 Last Friday, the State Department released its annual Hong Kong Policy Act Report. The report, which covers political changes in Hong Kong from April 2022 through January 2023, concludes that Beijing has used the National Security Law (NSL) to severely curtail freedoms in Hong Kong. Supplementing this research on political prosecutions and the rule of law, the US Consulate in Hong Kong is also maintaining a database of NSL-related arrests, which can be accessed here: Posted by #US #香港政策法 #打压人权 #消失的民主自由 #国安法 #政治犯 #以言入罪 #荒谬法治

"The truth is that national security is being used as a hollow pretext to wage an all out war on civil society. The truth is that our movement for human rights and democracy is home grown and not some sinister foreign implant. The truth is that people here have a voice of their own that will not be silenced..." Tonyee Chow Hang-tung, 38, a prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy activist and former vice-chairperson of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China, was among those convicted by a magistrate's court. Under the constitutional principle of One country, two systems, the Hong Kong Basic Law ensures that Hong Kong will retain its capitalist economic system and own currency (the Hong Kong Dollar), legal system, legislative system, and same human rights and freedoms, as a special administrative region (SAR) of China for 50 years. Two years ago today, the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) laid siege to Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Poly U) for 13 days. Post by IG @students4hk PDF for download: The police trapped students inside and arrested anyone who tried to leave or enter including first-aiders, volunteers, and reporters. HKPF claimed that protesters were hiding in disguise. They shot: 1,458 tear gas canisters 1,391 rubber bullets 325 bean bag rounds 256 sponge grenades in one day. 1,100 people were arrested through the 2 weeks. Universities are for education and growth, not war. The government failed us. The police never meant to protect us. The PolyU siege is a prominent example of HKPF's horrific abuse of power and the need for all of us to stand in solidarity with our peers. This fight is for every Hongkonger and student. #hongkongprotest #polytechnicuniversity #polyusiege #POLYU #理大围城 #入POLY #救手足 #抗争两年
